There was a multitude of labor unions and labor issues that occurred during the late 19th century. Samuel Gompers founded the American Federation of Labor in 1886. Though this was a big step in the way of labor unions, it was counteracted by the Haymarket Square Riot in during that same year where a bomb went off and resulted in the death of some laborers. There was also many strikes during this time period, such as the Homestead Steel Strike and the Pullman Strike. Both of these ended badly for the laborers and effectively diminished their popularity through the use of the government and violence to calm the riots.
Yellow Journalism By: Veronica France
This was a technique utilized throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Many journalists such as Jacob Riis and Ida Tarbel were sometimes associated with this type of journalism. In this, the newspapers would highly sensationalize the publication of articles that would woo customers to buy the newspaper. They used jingoism - or the use of highly nationalistic language in order to promote a feeling of patriotism within citizens. During the Spanish-American War, there were many newspapers that covered the sinking of the U.S.S Maine and used nationalistic language to promote the United States involvement in the war with Cuba and Spain.
Haymarket Square Riot!
This picture depicts the Haymarket Square Riot in 1886. This was a collection of laborers who were meeting to discuss their views. They were put down by the police that resulted in the death of some laborers.
Women's Suffrage By: Veronica France
As the Women's movement continued into the late 19th century, they fought harder for suffrage. Originally most prominent in the North and West, the National American Women's Suffrage Association bled into the South. They began to have more say in politics due to the amount of women who were in the workforce. They began to call for an end to racism and a want for higher education for women.
